Preliminary design work has been undertaken by East Sussex County Council (ESCC) consultants on two minor schemes intended to promote alternatives to private transport and to improving facilities for public transport.
A third scheme (South Downs Way – A259 crossing) was completed in April 2004.
Weald Way Bus Stop - Dukes Drive
The bus stop located adjacent to St Bede’s Preparatory School in Dukes Drive has no dedicated shelter, no facilities for disabled parking and is predominantly congested by long-term vehicle parking. This location, which is also the start point for the South Downs Way and a primary access point for coastal walks, is also served by a café with a small seating area.
The preferred scheme is intended to facilitate disabled access, improve the bus stop facilities and to provide additional seating space associated with the café.
Consultation on the preferred scheme will be carried out in advance of any detailed design work with the construction time - table dependent on the allocation of Local Transport Plan (LTP) funding.
Beachy Head Road - bus turning area
The existing bus turning area located south of the Countryside Centre on the Beachy Head Road does not incorporate any shelter facilities. The preferred preliminary design intends to provide a covered shelter and additional environmental and aesthetic improvements.
Consultation on the preferred scheme will be carried out in advance of any detailed design work with the construction time-table dependent on the allocation of LTP funding.
South Downs Way - A259 crossing
The South Downs Way crosses the A259 adjacent to the Downs Golf Club. A scheme has been constructed where the existing crossing has been relocated to provide for a safer crossing facility.
Further works on this scheme may be implemented dependent on a monitoring exercise of the effectiveness of the current arrangement.
