The Highway Authority is considering relocating the Ring Road in Eastbourne from Ashford Road to run along the A2040 (The Avenue and Upper Avenue) and over Cavendish Place Rail Bridge.

It was considered that the A2040 would provide a better link for through traffic wishing to bypass around the town centre.

Traffic from the west of the town, travelling along the A259 from Seaford could be routed through the proposed new Ring Road towards either the A22 route to London or along the A2021 Whitley Road and A259 Seaside toward Pevensey Bay and Hastings.

In addition the proposed link roads through the Eastbourne Park (Tutts Barn Link, St Anthony's Link and Seaside Link) would be accessed from the A2021, adjacent to the Whitley Road Rail Bridge.

The proposed relocation of the Ring Road to The Avenue and Upper Avenue would provide good traffic links to these potential Link Roads.

East Sussex County Council has indicated its desire to borrow money to undertake this scheme in its Local Transport Plan (LTP) for the period of 2006 to 2011. However, the scheme will still need to compete for funding amongst the other schemes identified in the LTP.
