A feasibility study and preliminary design was undertaken in 2003 for the area immediately east of the pier to determine an optimum arrangement for a coach dropping-off point that will maximise the space available. The proposed scheme will include provision for taxis, reallocation of space for disabled vehicle parking, and a reduction of the existing conflict between pedestrians and vehicles.
A range of options has been presented to the public with the roundabout scenario stated as the preferred option by the consultees. However, following a Safety Audit, it was determined that a roundabout could not be accommodated within the existing infrastructure due to the location of the adjacent Puffin type pedestrian crossing. Therefore, external consultants working on behalf of ESCC prepared detailed designs for a traffic signal option and a priority junction option.
Following completion of the Seaside Road and Terminus Road schemes, the design has been re-evaluated and a potential roundabout option, involving the relocation of the Puffin crossing, reconsidered. However, the scheme is currently under consideration as the implications of the possible relocation of the Ring Road need to be fully understood before the proposals can be finalised.
