Hartfield Square

Location (BN21 2AP)

Approximately 300 metres north of Eastbourne railway station and adjacent to the north side of The Avenue.

History

The square is overlooked by large Victorian mansions to which it used to belong and is part of a wider Town Centre Conservation Area. The original brick perimeter wall is minus its iron railings apparently removed during World War II.

In 2012 the square became nominated as a Queen Elizabeth II Field.

Main Attractions

The square has a large lawn area for informal recreation and a perimeter belt of mature trees with some shrubs. The lawns are crossed by several gravel-surfaced paths dotted with seats. Spring bulb drifts have been planted in some areas of the lawns.
