Eco Eastbourne - Environment Strategy 2010-2013
Find out about Eastbourne's Environment Strategy for 2010-2013, including our action on air quality...

Pollution comes in many forms - air, noise, land and water pollution. The council's Environmental Health Officers are responsible for protecting public health and carrying out monitoring of pollution.

You can find out more about the council's responsibilities in this section, as well as other agencies we work with to combat pollution.

In this section...

  • Air Quality - advice about bonfires and dust nuisance problems. Air quality review and assessment, readings and forecasts. Environmental permits for Part B industrial processes

  • Noise Control - advice about neighbour noise nuisance problems and noise from commercial premises including pubs and clubs

  • Public Health - advice on public health problems, including drains, sewers, refuse and smells

  • Water Sampling - find out about swimming pool and drinking water quality in Eastbourne
  • Sea Bathing Water Quality - find out about the excellent water quality of Eastbourne's award winning beaches, and download the Environment Agency's sea water sampling results

  • Oil Pollution - find out about the council's Marine Pollution Plan, who is responsible for dealing with oil pollution and how to report an incident online

  • Contaminated Land - find out about contaminated land and download our strategy document

  • Radiation - find out about background radiation monitoring by the council. Get advice about mobile phones and your health

  • Release of Balloons and Lanterns - find out why mass release of helium filled balloons and Chinese type lanterns can cause harm to the environment, particularly marine life, wildlife and livestock

Wherever possible the council tries to advise and educate people and businesses on how to avoid causing pollution.

However, we can also impose conditions and restrictions on certain activities and serve notices to force people to deal with pollution problems. Find out more on our Pollution Enforcement Policy page in this section.

Pollution of rivers and lakes is dealt with by the government's Environment Agency, who also regulate major industries and carry out a wide range of national and local environmental monitoring.
