The council is responsible for the maintenance of the decorative lighting that is installed along the seafront from Western Lawns to Princes Park.
The lighting is switched on from Easter until the end of September and then again over the Christmas period. Over recent years the lighting period has been extended to accommodate a number of out of season conferences.
The decorative lighting consists of 15w white lamps suspended from catenary wires between lighting columns. In all there is nearly three miles of lighting containing about 10,000 light bulbs. We replace approximately 7,000 bulbs per year. Spread over the period of the year when the lights are on this equates to approximately 25 bulbs per night blowing. Obviously more bulbs blow during storms and in severe storms hundreds of bulbs may blow.
As the existing lighting is susceptible to both vandalism and the weather a trial involving two different types of low voltage systems was been installed along Royal Parade in 2006. This lighting is more energy efficient and we hope it will prove to be more vandal and weather resistant.
You can report faulty seafront lighting online or telephone 01323 415235.
All other street lights are the responsibility of East Sussex County Council. You can report faulty street lighting online using the East Sussex Fault Reporting Service or by calling 0345 6080193.
