Parks and Gardens News January 2007

Snow cover on seafront benches
The weather has hit the headlines more than once this month.

Gales battered the area on the 18th and brought down a small number of trees and branches.  Although there was some damage done to property there were no injuries reported and the clean-up was quick and efficient.  Along the seafront a little shingle was thrown up on the promenade at the band stand.

A cold snap followed on the 24th with snow producing picturesque scenes for a few hours during the morning.   The snow lingered a day or so longer up on the Downs but was barely enough to make it worthwhile getting the sledge out.
Black Swan at Princes Park

Australian visitor in Princes Park

On 28th January a Black Swan was spotted enjoying the tranquility of Princes Park.  The Black Swan is closely related to the Mute Swan and is a similar size.

The Black Swan originates in Australia where it is the state bird of Western Australia.  Over the years birds have been introduced for ornamental purposes and have then escaped into he wild.  They do not often breed in the UK and with competition from our native swans it is unlikely they will ever become well established.

Black Swans feed on algae and weed which they reach by plunging their long necks into the water.
Rusty railings at the Carpet Gardens

Facelift for Carpet Gardens

Work begins during the last week of January to replace the railings that surround the Carpet Gardens.

After years of exposure to salt-laden winds the railings have corroded beyond repair.  Despite annual repainting and maintenance the metal has weakened so new sections have been fabricated.  The main support posts will remain and be renovated.  The old railings will be removed and new railing sections will then be fitted around the whole garden.

The project should be completed by the end of March.
