Spring has arrived early this year and the floral displays around Eastbourne are looking fantastic.
In Hampden Park a mix of white, purple and yellow crocuses are all out on the lawns west of the pond. Other nearby areas have large drifts of daffodils just beginning to bloom.
Following a relatively mild winter and a prolonged run of sunny days during February many plants have flowered up to a month early. While the mild weather lasts there are quite a few insects to be seen including some of the bigger bumblebees. In the countryside around Eastbourne numerous woods are already showing advanced growth of this year's bluebells although no flowers yet.
Sponsored Roundabouts
Eastbourne is home to numerous attractively landscaped roundabouts. Several have spring bedding or bulbs that look eye-catching at the moment.
The Station Roundabout, generously sponsored by Reid and Dean, is currently ablaze with red polyanthus. These are nicely contrasted with a background of small black-leaved lilies and white gravel.
The Reid and Dean sponsorship has enabled the Council's Parks and Gardens team to enhance the planting to its present standard and create a local landmark.
Roundabout Daffodils
Ansvar Insurance sponsor the Upper Avenue Roundabout where daffodils are currently creating a dazzling display of early colour. Several different daffodil varieties on the site mean that the blooms should continue for some weeks yet.
The sponsorship from Ansvar Insurance goes towards the maintenance of the roundabout and future enhancements. One of these will shortly include the planting of drifts of a late flowering bulb that will produce its flowers towards the autumn.
