Built between 1804 – 1810, to defend Eastbourne from the threat of Napoleonic invasion, the Redoubt is the largest of its kind on the south coast.
It was used as a supply depot for the nearby Martello Towers and as a barracks until the early 1900s.
Although it was then retired from military service it was later called up for duty again during both World Wars.
