Centurion Mk III Tank at the Redoubt Fortress

Come and discover 200 years of history

Eastbourne’s hidden treasure, only the parapet of this impressive circular Napoleonic fortress is visible from Royal Parade. However, visitors are greeted near its entrance by the Centurion Mk III tank which silently guards the building.

Today this magnificent Napoleonic fortress is home to the largest military museum in the South East. On display are the rich collections of

  • The Royal Sussex Regimental Collection

  • The Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars Regimental Collection

  • The Sussex Combined Services Collection

Staff and volunteers have worked hard to refurbish existing displays and to research and create new ones for 2008.  These include:

  • Zulu - The Story of the Anglo Zulu War of 1879

  • Eastbourne's Home Front

  • History of The Royal Engineers in Eastbourne

  • Refurbishment of The Queen's Royal Irish Regimental Museum: including updating the Korean War display and the Regimental Silver

The restored Redoubt is now a scheduled monument.
