Housing Needs

The Housing Market Assessment for Eastbourne and South Wealden carried out in 2007 looks at how the local housing markets work. It shows where people in the area move to and from and where they travel to work. It also shows the amount, size and type of housing needed in Eastbourne.

The Housing Needs Survey 2005 asked 6,920 households what kind of housing they would need in the next 3 years. The Survey Report gives details of what people said and what this tells us about the housing needed in Eastbourne.

A Specialist Housing Needs Survey was carried out at the same time through interviews with Black and minority ethnic households, older people, young people and people with learning disabilities.

The Sub-regional Summary brings together information from all the surveys carried out across the whole of East Sussex and Brighton & Hove.

Eastbourne Borough Council has jointly commissioned Directions & Arc4 Planning Consultancy to undertake a Strategic Housing Market Assessment of the Eastbourne Housing Market Area.

This is an essential piece of research to make sure that Eastbourne’s forthcoming housing strategy ‘At Home in Eastbourne’ and Core Strategy Planning Policy reflect what is needed to improve homes in the town.

The study will give the Council the evidence its needs to plan for and encourage investment in new homes in Eastbourne.

The work will take place over the next few months and will include field work by researchers meeting up with local people, estate agents, landlords and developers.

The researchers will examine the structure of the housing market across Eastbourne, housing need and the supply and demand for places to live. When the work is complete, we will understand what we need to do to try and balance Eastbourne’s housing market for current and future demand.

The study is a refresh of the original Strategic Housing Market Assessment completed five years ago. The final report is due in the summer of 2012.
