Asbestos in Your Home

The Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA) website has a useful Guide to Asbestos in the Home, covering what is asbestos, why it is a problem, where it is found in the home, types of materials, when to leave it in place and how to safely remove it when necessary.

It is very hard to identify asbestos, but if you suspect that you are living with asbestos:

  • Do not panic - leave asbestos alone, it is safe unless it is damaged or disturbed. Removing it can be more dangerous than leaving it in place

  • Paint indoor materials with an alkali resistant paint such as PVA emulsion

  • Never sand, drill or saw asbestos materials

  • Always seek professional advice before thinking of removing asbestos materials

  • Do not attempt to remove asbestos lagging, spray coatings or insulation board by yourself. These materials can only be safely removed by a licensed contractor

  • Sometimes it will be necessary to take a sample, for example to identify the type of asbestos. Only employ a suitably trained person to sample or do a survey of the premises

Council officers are not able to carry out survey inspections of asbestos containing materials (ACM) or arrange for removal of asbestos in either homes or businesses. It is suggested however that you seek professional advice from a reputable asbestos contractor, approved by a recognised accreditation body.

Asbestos Testing And Consultancy Association (ATaC) member companies can provide survey and testing services. If removal of asbestos is required, ARCA maintains a list of licensed contractors willing to work in domestic premises - go to the ARCA website or telephone 01283 531126.

You can get further general information about asbestos from the Health and Safety Executive Infoline, telephone 0845 345 0055.
