Having Work Done on Your Home
If you need to get builders and contractors to do work on your home, you can download advice leaflets from the Office of Fair Trading below.
The leaflets give practical tips on how to avoid problems with contractors, and a list of trade organisations and advice agencies who can help you.
Contractor Call Scheme
In Eastbourne, the free Contractor Call service can put you in touch with approved building contractors who have been carefully checked and have agreed to meet strict conditions. Telephone 01323 724433.
Buy with Confidence Scheme
The East Sussex Trading Standards Buy with Confidence approved trader scheme also lists contractors for home maintenance and improvements. Telephone 01323 418215 or view the list of traders online using the link from this page.
Help for Elderly and Vulnerable Homeowners
Whilst it is primarily the responsibility of homeowners to maintain their own property, some homeowners, such as elderly and vulnerable people, do not have the resources to keep their homes in good repair.
If you are over 60 or disabled, on means tested benefits, the council may be able to give you financial help - go to our Private Housing Assistance section to find out about grants, loans and other types of assistance:
