If you are struggling to pay your mortgage, get in touch with your mortgage lender straight away. Lenders must deal fairly with customers who are in arrears and have a range of ‘Hardship Tools’ to help people in difficulty with their mortgage. These include a payment holiday, reducing monthly payments for a time, or extending the term of the loan.
If you are on Income Support, Pension Credit or income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance you may be able to get short term support through Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI). This is now available after 13 weeks, rather than 39 weeks and can support mortgages up to £175,000. For more information on these contact Jobcentre Plus on 01323 413000, text phone 417954 or use the Jobcentre Plus link on this page.
If you are in danger of losing your home because of a drop in your household income you may be eligible for Homeowners Mortgage Support from your mortgage lender. For more details, download the leaflet and the Questions and Answers below.
The Government has also introduced a new Mortgage Rescue Scheme for some people who have exhausted all other options. The scheme is run by Moat Housing. For more details, download the Factsheet below.
