Our state-of-the-art refurbished main offices at 1 Grove Road have dramatically reduced the building’s carbon footprint through new energy efficient windows and solar shading, with further energy saving improvements being considered.
Reducing Our Carbon Footprint
Eastbourne residents visiting the Customer Contact Centre at 1 Grove Road in 2010 will have seen scaffolding erected around our main council office at the back of the Library.
Now the work is complete you can see distinctive solar shading around the sides of the building. This work is real action to Act on CO2 and reduce the council’s carbon footprint.
Good Practice and Innovative Design
The building work at 1 Grove Road combined common practice with innovative design. Simple steps include ensuring all the new windows have the best energy efficiency rating, and installation of solar shading to reduce the need for air conditioning.
We are investigating solar panels on the roof of the building, as part of our SolarBourne project to fit solar panels to council homes and buildings across the town. Find out more in this section:
We are also considering the replacement of the outdated, fossil-fuel hungry heating at our offices with a sustainable biomass boiler.
As well as greener offices at 1 Grove Road, the associated efficiency programme, including moving out of 68 Grove Road and investing to save in IT systems, will also improve customer service and cut costs, saving £3 million over the next 10 years. The project has gained national recognition, with the council being awarded a runner-up medallist in the prestigious 2011 UK IT Industry Awards. Other Action on Climate Change
As a coastal town, climate change is an important issue for Eastbourne, and therefore a key concern to the council.
We are committed to Act on CO2 and fight the effects of climate change, and are showing the way for businesses and residents of the town. Many of the changes we are making are small, but with significant impact on our carbon footprint.
In our Climate Change section you can find out more about the council's work to improve our assets, and other actions we are taking to reduce Eastbourne's carbon footprint:
