Can I get benefits from before I applied?
In certain circumstances, we may consider backdating your claim for benefits to a date before you made your claim. All requests for backdated benefits must be made in writing and you must have a good reason as to why you could not claim on time.
How far back can backdated Housing Benefit be paid?
We can backdate a Housing Benefit claim for up to three or six months, counting back from the date we receive a written request from you. This written request should tell us why you haven't applied for benefit before.
Can I get my claim backdated? What do I need to show?
We can only backdate your benefit if you are able to show us continuing good cause why you did not claim your benefit at the time, so we will normally need supporting evidence. An example of this may be a letter from your doctor if you have been ill and were unable to put in an application. You will also need to provide proof of all you income and capital for the period you want to claim backdated benefit.
How do I claim backdated Housing Benefit?
You must apply to us in writing if you want your housing or council tax benefit backdated. You will need to complete a 'Backdated Claim' Form. Depending on what you tell us we may ask for supporting evidence. For example a letter from your doctor if you are/were ill.
What happens after I request backdated benefit?
We will look at your request and send you a decision in writing. If you do not agree with the decision you will be able to request an appeal.
