High Hedges Disputes: Complaining to the Council

High Hedge

What is a high hedge?

A hedge – or part of a hedge causing problems – made up of a line of two or more trees or shrubs; and

  • Is mostly evergreen or semi-evergreen; and
  • Is a height of more than 2 metres above ground level; and
  • Obstructs light or views even though there are gaps in the foliage or between the trees; and
  • Is affecting domestic property; and
  • Is growing on land owned by someone else; and
  • Must detract from the reasonable enjoyment of your home or garden because it is too tall.

You can complain to the Borough Council if:

  • the hedge in dispute over 2 metres in height
  • you have tried and exhausted all other avenues for resolving your dispute with your neighbour
