From 1 July 2007, virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England became smokefree.
Smoking in these places is a thing of the past – and against the law, wherever no-smoking signs are displayed. Enjoy the smokefree air.
Socialise and Work Smokefree
The new smokefree law makes a healthier environment, so everyone can socialise, relax, travel, shop and work free from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.
The smokefree legislation will save thousands of lives over the next decade. To find out more, see Secondhand Smoke - The Invisible Killer.
People are not able to smoke in pubs, clubs, bars, cafes, shops, offices and factories, or in taxis and public transport.
How the Law Will Affect You
Staff smoking rooms and indoor smoking areas are no longer be allowed, so anyone who wants to smoke will have to go outside. Public transport and most work vehicles also need to be smokefree.
To find out more, you can download or order a free leaflet for the public - How the new Smokefree Law Will Affect You, from the Smokefree England website, as well as view TV adverts online.
You can also download the leaflet in 24 other languages, as well as an easy read version.
Employers, managers and people in charge of premises should go to our Smokefree Guidance for Businesses section.
