The number of cases of listeria in people over 60 has doubled in the past nine years, with one in three of those ill dying as a result.
Avoid Food Poisoning
Listeria is a type of food poisoning bacteria that can live and grow in food - and it is chilled food in particular where you need to be careful, for example pâté, cooked sliced meats, soft cheeses, cooked sliced meats and ready to eat prepacked chilled meals.
Anyone over 60, who is ill or who has a long-term medical condition is at increased risk. Taking a closer look at food labels could save your life.
A Closer Look at Labels Could Save Your Life
Take the following steps to avoid illness:
- Keep fridges between 0ºC and 5ºC and use a thermometer to check the temperature
- Follow the storage instructions on the label for ready to eat foods
- Check the ‘use by’ date on food. If the date is passed throw it away
- Wash salads and fruit before eating
- When reheating food follow the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure it is piping hot in the centre
- Cooked food whether bought or delivered should be eaten as soon as possible or put it in the fridge till you are ready
