Food Safety Week 2010

GermWatch - Keeping Food Safe

This year National Food Safety Week runs from Monday 7 June to Sunday 13 June 2010.

The theme this year is cooking food thoroughly at home and avoiding cross-contamination.

Food Safety Week will continue the GermWatch publicity first launched in 2008.

Cooking Thoroughly and Avoiding Cross-contamination

The week, which is organised by the Food Standards Agency, will focus on the most important actions associated with preventing campylobacter:

  • cooking thoroughly

  • avoiding cross-contamination

Reducing Campylobacter Foodborne Illness

Campylobacter causes the greatest number of cases of foodborne illness in the UK each year. There were about 55,000 reported cases of campylobacteriosis in the UK in 2008 but many more cases go unreported – the realistic number of cases is more likely to be closer to 375,000 each year.

The theme of Food Safety Week supports the FSA Strategy 2010-2015, which identifies reducing foodborne disease, particularly tackling campylobacter in chicken, as a key priority.
