The rating scheme makes it much easier to find out if a restaurant, takeaway or food shop has good food hygiene standards.

The food hygiene rating given to a business reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of the last inspection by the council's Environmental Health Officers.
The food hygiene rating is not a guide to the quality of food.
What the Ratings Mean
The hygiene standards found at the time of inspection are rated on a scale. The top of the scale is ‘5’ - very good:
5 - very good
4 - good
3 - generally satisfactory
2 - improvement necessary
1 - major improvement necessary
0 - urgent improvement necessary
Businesses do not have to display the hygiene rating sticker or certificate, so if you see a business without a rating displayed, either use the mobile app or decide if you want to eat or buy food from there without knowing the hygiene standards:
