Free vaccinations against seasonal flu are available for people aged 65 and over and for adults and children aged 6 months to 65 years in certain risk categories from October.
This winter, the H1N1 strain of the flu virus is one of three strains of flu that the NHS seasonal flu jab protects against. H1N1 is the same strain of flu behind last year's swine flu pandemic.
Don't Underestimate Seasonal Flu
After the recent publicity surrounding swine flu, it is important not to underestimate the impact of seasonal flu. Every year it causes approximately 8,000 deaths.
Seasonal flu can bring on serious complications for people in at risk groups and lead to other serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
Ask Your GP for a Free Flu Jab
For seasonal flu, the NHS recommends flu immunisation for everyone aged 65 years and over. Free flu jabs are available from your GP surgery if you are in a vulnerable high risk group.
If you suffer from chronic illnesses such as asthma or diabetes, or you are 65 or over, you are especially at risk. Contact your GP for this year’s free flu jab.
