Coughs and Sneezes Spread Diseases

Simple hygiene steps can prevent the spread of colds and flu, and will also play a major role in slowing the spread of pandemic influenza.

The NHS raises awareness through a publicity campaign Coughs and Sneezes Spread Diseases.

Stop Germs Spreading

A series of posters show the importance of:

  • covering nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
  • using disposable tissues and throwing them away afterwards in a bin
  • cleaning hands regularly, especially after coughing and sneezing

A recent survey emphasised the need for better cough and sneeze etiquette to stop germs spreading:

  • half of people do not carry a tissue outside the house
  • more than three in ten people use the same tissue at least two or three times
  • one in ten people do not always wash their hands before preparing food

Posters will be displayed in public buildings including GP surgeries, health centres and schools. You can download a poster from the Department of Health website.
