Secondhand Smoke - The Invisible Killer

NHS Secondhand Smoke Campaign - Cafe Poster

A new TV advertising campaign from the NHS features real members of the public and shows the health reasons behind the new law to make workplaces and enclosed public places smokefree.

TV Advertising Campaign

A series of adverts show smokers and non-smokers in a hairdressing salon, a cafe and a bar.

The first TV commercial in the Secondhand Smoke - The Invisible Killer campaign was shown from 5 March 2007 onwards.

It features a family wedding and the impact of just one cigarette on relatives, including young children.

What You See is Not What You Get

The message is that with secondhand smoke, what you see is not what you get. Up to 85 percent of secondhand smoke is invisible and odourless, and just as harmful as the smoke you can see.

The wedding advert shows pervasive, dark smoke curling around guests to demonstrate just how much smoke is being produced from one person’s cigarette.

Although the smoker attempts to blow and waft smoke away from the other non smoking guests, this still does nothing to reduce the potential risk to them.

The first TV ad ran until 8 April 2007, supported by press, online and outdoor advertising, direct marketing and the Go Smokefree website, where you can view the TV advert and posters online.

Press adverts and posters show secondhand smoke at the wedding, in a cafe and in a garage, with the themes:

  • The deadly toxins you see, the 85% you don't
  • The more you see, the more you don't
  • What you see is not what you get
