We do not guarantee to reply to posts, but we will read them all and views expressed here will be fed into council reports.

Over the coming weeks, we will add more topics about local issues, but to start with we are asking about a major issue that affects all councils: recycling, and the best way to encourage it. Tell us what you think. You can also submit a suggestion for a new topic.

How much should Councillors be paid? 3 13 Jan 2007 21:21:53
Councillors are paid allowances to offset their personal costs in discharging their duties. The level of such allowances is recommended by an independent panel. Eastbourne’s Councillors currently receive well below the average rate of allowance compared with other Shire District Councils. As a result, the independent panel recently met and recommended an increase of around a 50% for all councillors. This would need additional budget of up to £60,000 per year but would still keep Eastbourne allowances below the average. The following link will give you access to the full report from the independent panel:

Decisions on allowances are always difficult to make. On the one hand, the Council must have regard to overall budget pressures. On the other hand, insufficient allowance can deter many people from standing for election because they cannot afford the running costs, thus reducing the chance of the Council being truly representative. Please have a look at the report and post your views here on how you think the Council should proceed on this.
Have you ever attended Planning Committee? What did you think? 3 24 Dec 2007 22:49:55
Calling all who have attended a Planning Committee meeting at the Town Hall. As a result of a recent review, it is clear that we need to improve the working of the Council’s Planning Committee.

What did you think of the committee meeting you went to and what can we do to improve its operation?
What do you think of the new pub laws? 1 12 Dec 2006 14:20:26
It has now been a year since the more relaxed alcohol licensing laws came into effect. As a result, a number of pubs and clubs are able to stay open later.

Have you noticed a difference in Eastbourne and the quality of your life as a result?
