History of Eastbourne's Weather

Seven Sisters, Eastbourne Sepia Photograph

Eastbourne's meteorological service has a long history.

Official weather records have been kept continuously in Eastbourne since 1867 and we continue to record and report weather data to the Met Office daily.

Go to About Our Weather Stations to find out more about the history of Eastbourne's Meteorological Station, established in 1888.

For long term averages from Eastbourne's weather records over the last hundred years you can download our Annual Reports in this section.

A Weather Timeline Since 1117

You can download A History of Eastbourne's Weather below, with a timeline of notable local weather events.

It highlights extremes of weather through the centuries, from when Henry I was detained in Eastbourne by a gale in 1117 while he was on his way to Normandy, right up to the hurricane that swept through southern England in October 1987.

Key dates from the history timeline are also included in a colour slide show presentation to download.
