Learn about weather, climate and meteorology. Find out what a meteorologist does.

Meteorology is the science and study of the earth's atmosphere and its interaction with the earth itself and all forms of life. It seeks to understand climate and to predict weather.

The Difference Between Weather and Climate

There is a difference between weather and climate.

  • Weather is always changing. The weather is the conditions in the atmosphere and the air around us at a particular moment.

  • Climate is the combination of all the elements of weather at a particular place.

  • Weather consists of meteorological events, such as rain, wind and sunshine, that can change day by day, even hour by hour.

  • Climate is the average of all these events over a period of time.

What Our Meteorologist Does

Our Meteorologist in Eastbourne does not make weather forecasts, but observes the weather using thermometers and other special instruments at our weather station, and keeps our official records of past weather.
