How to Read a Barometer

Download our advice leaflet on how to read a barometer. Find out how to set your barometer.

Barometers are instruments used to measure atmospheric pressure.

A barometer measures air pressure - the weight of air above it at any time - so you can take readings to see how the pressure varies.

Barometers do not indicate present weather conditions, but help you to forecast probable conditions 12 to 24 hours later, taking into consideration any changes in the direction of the wind.

Our leaflet, available below in PDF format, explains how to understand barometer readings.

You can view barometer readings online, fed to our website from an electronic weather station - see Live Eastbourne Weather.

Setting Your Barometer

See Other Websites for additional information, including advice on setting your barometer. You need to set your barometer to get it to read sea level air pressure, although the barometer itself is not at sea level.
