Rainfall in November 2009 was the highest in Eastbourne since our records began in 1867. Parts of Hampden Park and some other areas of the town were subject to flooding.

The total rainfall for the month was 235.2 millimetres compared with the previous record of 222.5 which was recorded in November 1877.

Highest Rainfall Since Our Records Began in 1867

Rainfall was recorded every day in the month, and also rainfall was recorded every day from 31st October to 14th December, that is 43 unbroken days, which is exceptional. The monthly total was also the 2nd highest in any month ever recorded; the highest being 261.1 mm in October 2000.

For those of you interested in more facts and figures, the total rainfall for the year to the end of November is 743.3 mm. The average annual rainfall since 1867 is approximately 800mm, so 2009 is not exceptional overall.

The most recent long run of rain was recorded in the autumn of 2000 when rain fell for most days in October, November and December.
