Where Does Our Rubbish Go?

The residual waste (anything which has not been recycled or composted) which is collected in Eastbourne can go to one of two different destination.  The first is the landfill site and the second is the Energy from Waste facility (EfW).

We want to minimise the amount of waste going to landfill, or to an EfW facility - to do this we must all reduce, reuse and recycle!
Landfill solutions, in order of effectiveness
The waste triangle shows the preferential order of ways to deal with waste:

  • Reducing the amount of things we buy, so there is less to throw away
  • Reusing and mending things, so they last longer and so there is less waste in the long term
  • Recycling and composting materials so that they are used to make new things
  • Diverting waste to an Energy from Waste facility where energy is generated
  • Landfill is the last option as the waste does not go on to be 'useful' i.e. it is not used to make a new product or energy
