There are many easy changes that a household could make to ensure that they reduce the amount of food that is thrown away.
- Planning – Plan meals in advance and stick to a shopping list. Don’t shop when you are hungry as you may buy items that wont get eaten.
- ‘Use by’ – Check ‘use by’ dates to make sure the food will last until you want it.
- ‘BOGOF’ – Don’t be drawn in by ‘Buy One Get One Free’ offers unless you will be able to use them.
- Freezer – Check your freezer before shopping, food can often get forgotten at the back.
- Fridge – Ensure your fridge is between 1°C and 5°C so that food will last longer.
- Portions – Measure food like pasta, rice and potatoes so that you don’t cook too much.
- Storage – Ensure food is kept in reasonable containers so that it does not perish. Freeze any leftovers you don’t want to use straightaway for use at a later time.
- Leftovers – Leftovers can be turned into other dishes, some examples of recipes to do this are on the recipe page under further information.
