Storing food in appropriate ways can help to increase its shelf life.  There are guidelines on the labels of most food to give advice on this but below are some basic tips.

Fridges should be kept between 1°C and 5°C to ensure items inside it don’t perish ahead of time.

Freezers are a great way to store food as there is very little that can’t be frozen.  Items which are close to their ‘use by’ date can be put into the freezer for use at a later date.  Leftovers can be put into reusable containers and frozen as a home-made ready meals saving money and waste.

Plastic takeaway containers can be very useful when reused for storage and transportation of food as they are airtight and often see-through, so it is possible to see at a glance what is inside them if they are in the freezer.  Reusing your takeaway containers can reduce your waste and save money on purchasing storage containers.
