Each household in the UK throws away an estimated £420 worth of food a year. This is the equivalent to about a third of all the food we buy and most of it could have been eaten if it was used in time or if we didn’t cook so much.
Wasting food is not just a waste of money; it is a waste of energy, water and packaging used in its production transportation and storage and is also very harmful to the environment. When food goes to landfill it rots and releases methane which is a damaging greenhouse gas.
