Sea Water Quality

Eastbourne Beach

Eastbourne has a double award winning beach, thanks in part to excellent water quality.

Our main resort beach from the Pier to the Wish Tower has a European Blue Flag Award and a Quality Coast Award.

The beach from the Wish Tower to Falling Sands has a second Quality Coast Award.

During the summer period the Environment Agency tests the sea water quality between the Pier and the Wish Tower to check it adheres to the European Union's Bathing Water Directive. You can download the sea water sampling results below.

The EU Directive sets standards of bathing water quality for all popular beaches in Europe. Eastbourne's sea water reaches the Guideline standard, the highest standard signifying excellent quality bathing water.

If you do come across evidence of pollution on the beach, you can report it online on the East Sussex Fault Reporting Service website.

Routine clearing of litter from the beach is organised by the council's Cleansing team and is not considered pollution as such. The Environment Agency deals with pollution of rivers and lakes.
