The council unanimously agreed at full Council in September 2010, to recognise the potential environmental harm of both the mass release of helium filled balloons and Chinese type lanterns, and we will discourage such releases from our land and property.

Balloons Can Kill Wildlife

We will look to educate widely on the issues surrounding the risks of both balloons and Chinese type lanterns, once released into the atmosphere.

There is signficiant concern about the mass release of gas filled balloons and Chinese lanterns, and the harm that the balloons cause to the environment, particularly marine life, wildlife and livestock.

Balloons present a serious choking threat to animals, birds and marine life as they are slow to break down and decompose. The Council takes its commitment to the environment very seriously, hence the reason for taking action on this issue.

Further Information

If you would like further information about what happens after balloons are released, visit the Marine Conservation Society's website where you can download a leaflet on the dangers of balloons.

Helpful Tips

Some helpful tips about wildlife friendly balloon use are listed below:

  • Do not let go of balloons outdoors

  • Fill balloons with air rather than helium

  • Use balloons made of natural rubber latex rather than mylar (foil) balloons

  • When tying balloons use natural cotton string rather than plastic ribbon

  • Securely tie any balloons that are used outside

  • Always hand tie balloons rather than using plastic valves
