Pollution comes in many forms - air, noise, land and water pollution. The council's Environmental Health service is responsible for protecting public health and carrying out monitoring of pollution.
You can find out more about the council's responsibilities in this section, as well as other agencies we work with to combat pollution.
In this section...
Noise Control - including advice about neighbour noise problems
Public Health - problems with drains, sewers, refuse and smells
Air Quality - including advice about bonfires
Water Sampling - swimming pool and drinking water quality
Beach pollution and sea water quality results
Contaminated land and background radiation monitoring
Wherever possible the council tries to advise and educate people and businesses on how to avoid causing pollution. However, we can also impose conditions and restrictions on certain activities and serve notices to force people to deal with pollution problems.
Pollution of rivers and lakes is dealt with by the government's Environment Agency, who also regulate major industries and carry out a wide range of national and local environmental monitoring.
