Crime, and the public fear of crime, can be influenced by the way in which we design and build new development. The layout, scale and detail of a development can influence people's behaviour and reduce or remove the opportunity for crimes to occur. The design of a development can also affect people's response to an area - "if an area looks safe, it feels safe."
The Designing Out Crime supplementary planning guidance describes ways to reduce crime in new developments. The guidance shows developers how they can reduce crime and the fear of crime by the careful consideration of the layout of new development. It has been produced in close co-operation with Sussex Police and is in line with their "Secured by Design" initiative. It will also give useful and practical ways of meeting our Crime and Disorder Reduction Strategy.
