Pest Control Advice

Herring Gull
Our pest control service covers:

  • Rats
  • Mice
  • Fleas
  • Wasps

You can contact us to arrange an appointment with a pest control officer - see our Services page.

We offer a range of leaflets to download in this section, with advice on dealing with many common home and garden pests.

We receive many enquiries about pests that we are not able to deal with, such as gulls, pigeons and foxes. You can get advice on some of these below and suggested websites for further information.

Good Sources of Pest Control Advice

See Other Websites for links to these organisations’ websites:

  • Bat Conservation Trust
  • British Pest Control Association (BPCA) – represents commercial pest control companies and includes a directory of members
  • Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) – advice on a range of wildlife control issues, including licences to control normally protected birds and animals
  • East Sussex Wildlife Rescue – local information and advice on seagulls, foxes, squirrels, badgers and bats
  • English Nature – advice on protected species including bats and badgers
  • Froglife – advice on snakes and amphibians
  • Gardening Which – advice leaflets on a wide range of garden visitors often thought of as pests, including mice, voles, birds, bees, wasps, slugs, snails, foxes, squirrels and badgers
  • Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) – advice on seagulls, pigeons, bird deterrents and wild birds and the law

Pests We Do Not Deal With

We often receive pest control enquiries about the following wildlife we don’t deal with.

  • Badgers are protected animals. You should notify Sussex Police if a person is seen digging at badger sets or badger baiting. If you find an injured badger at the side of the road, contact the RSPCA or a local vet. You can report a dead animal on the road using the East Sussex Fault Reporting Service.
  • Bats rarely cause a problem and all bats and their roost sites are protected by law, even if bats are not present all the time. If you have bats in your roof, their access must not be impeded. Never touch or handle bats without expert advice – there is a risk they are infected with the killer disease Rabies.
  • Bees - For advice and assistance if you have a problem, contact a local Beekeeper directly, listed below:

    Mr Miller - Tel: 01323 846987; Mobile 07929 194439
    Mr Stidder - Tel: 01323 721307; Mobile 07792 959576
    Mr Weller - Tel: Evening 01323 847812; Mobile 07789 543548
    Mr Pratt - Tel: 01323 841249; Mobile 07778 867136
  • Birds – wild birds, including pigeons and seagulls, are protected by law, so you must not harm or injure them. In certain circumstances, DEFRA issues licences to permit otherwise prohibited action to be taken by authorised persons to resolve problems with wildlife including herring gulls and feral pigeons. If you have pigeon problems, we recommend you contact a local private pest control company, who should be a member of the British Pest Control Association. If it is a council property, contact the Area Housing Officer at Eastbourne Homes Limited.
  • Foxes - see Leaflets for more advice
  • Slugs and Snails are not a public health risk. Various treatments are available in shops. Always read manufacturers' labels.
  • Snakes are a protected species and cannot be killed.
  • Squirrels
