Woodlands

We manage two principal areas of woodland; 88 Hectares of Woodland on the South Downs and 19 Hectares in Hampden Park.

Our woodlands are an important leisure facility for residents and visitors alike and the different user groups occasionally come into conflict (dog walkers and cyclists for example).  We cater for all users of our woodlands and we have set aside areas for cycling activities and created a mountain bike trail (awaiting the completion of a safety audit by ESCC).

The woodland within Hampden Park and adjoining Ham Shaw is different from the Downs as it is older and growing on clay as opposed to chalk. The Park's woodland has some splendid, mature Oak as well as Field maple, Elm, Ash and Sycamore.

It is managed for the safety of users, the continuity of the woodland - achieved by the thinning of regenerative growth, access for all - a level path suitable for wheelchair users runs through Ham Shaw - and as an educational and leisure resource - a fitness trail, orienteering course, and interpretation boards have recently been installed.

We work with the the Friends of Hampden Park in managing the park and woodland and this has provided support and ideas as well as seating areas and interpretation boards.
