Trees and Woodland News June 2006

Recycled water is used for trees in Eastbourne.

Recycled Water to Help New Trees Grow

All new trees planted in Eastbourne since 2004 are on a special watering contract using water that would normally pass out into the sea.

Every tree is given five gallons of the recycled water every two weeks for the first two years, then the only watering the trees need is from the rain.

Trees are important assets that require care and maintenance and watering is vital after planting to ensure their survival.

The water is poured down an irrigation pipe to a depth of 600mm to prevent surface evaporation and to encourage roots to develop at that level.

To ensure efficient use of natural resources, we are not using water from the mains supply. Our Contractor obtains water from the following sources.

  • In conjunction with the Environment Agency water is abstracted from the water course at Five Acre Field.

  • In conjunction with Southern Water, treated recycled water is taken from their treatment plant.

Both of these sources utilise water that would normally pass into the sea.
