Conservation areas are places of special architectural or historic interest, which have a particular character or appearance worthy of preservation or enhancement. Buildings, walls, trees, open spaces, views and the historic settlement patterns all combine to create an individual sense of place. It is the unique character of certain special areas that conservation area status seeks to protect. There are currently 12 conservation areas in Eastbourne.
Conservation Area Appraisals
The Council is currently undertaking a rolling programme of Character Appraisals for each of its 12 conservation areas. Once adopted, the appraisals will be available from the Council's Conservation Officer. Residents of each conservation area will be notified that a draft appraisal is being prepared for their area and will be encouraged to participate in the public consultation.

Torfield Conservation Area Appraisal
The Torfield Conservation Area was designated in 1991 and revised in 2012. The Conservation Area Appraisal shows the boundary of the conservation area, outlines its history and special characteristics and provides a Management Plan.
