Conservation Areas

A view over Meads conservation area from the South Downs

Conservation areas are places of special architectural or historic interest, which have a particular character or appearance worthy of preservation or enhancement. Buildings, walls, trees, open spaces, views and the historic settlement patterns all combine to create an individual sense of place. It is the unique character of certain special areas that conservation area status seeks to protect. There are currently 12 conservation areas in Eastbourne.

Conservation Area Appraisals

The Council is currently undertaking a rolling programme of Character Appraisals for each of its 12 conservation areas. Once adopted, the appraisals will be available from the Council's Conservation Officer. Residents of each conservation area will be notified that a draft appraisal is being prepared for their area and will be encouraged to participate in the public consultation.

Meads Conservation Area Appraisal

The Meads Conservation Area was designated in 1969, and has been extended in 1982 and 1988. The draft Conservation Area Appraisal has been prepared to describe what makes Meads special.

We are now seeking your views on the document.

The consultation period commences on the 30th September 2011, and comments should be received by the Council no later than 23rd December 2011.
