Car Free Day on 22 September

Walking instead of taking the car
Car Free Day is an annual event on 22 September each year across Europe and the world, when many people avoid using their cars to make a difference to the environment.

In Europe, Car Free Day is also known as the 'In Town Without My Car' event, part of European Mobility Week, which in 2008 ran from 16-22 September.

Some town centres even close their roads to all traffic (except public transport) so that people can get a glimpse of what our streets might be like with less traffic.

Why Have a Car Free Day?

This is an opportunity for just one day to find another way to get around town. Why not try leaving the car at home and:

  • walking
  • taking a bus
  • taking a train
  • cycling

This helps to highlight the pollution and congestion caused by cars – over a quarter of the UK's CO2 emissions come from transport and most of this is from cars. You might even save a little money and enjoy the change.

What Did the Council Do in 2008?

For Car Free Day on Monday 22 September 2008 it was agreed that wherever possible, Eastbourne Borough Council staff should try to carry out council business without using a car or van.

Some work by car and van was unavoidable such as responding to emergencies or where heavy equipment needed carrying, but all staff were ecouraged to plan their working day differently by walking, cycling, catching a bus or train, or postponing visits to another day wherever possible.

The Impact of Car-Free Day

By avoiding using your car even for one journey, you help to reduce pollution in your area and show others that you care. Of course if everyone joins in, we can start to make a difference.
