Access to Eastbourne Borough Council Building Control Plans 1865-1965

You can view plans submitted to Eastbourne Borough Council and its predecessors between 1865 and 1965 at the East Sussex Record Office (ESRO) in Lewes. They cover byelaw, building control and other similar purposes.

Plans from Other Periods

No plans survived before 1865 and very few before 1894.

Plans for buildings erected after 1965 remain in the custody of the Building Control Section of Eastbourne Borough Council.

How the Archive is set up

The archive of Eastbourne Building Control Plans consists of two elements:

  • a street index to plan numbers at DE/C/2
  • the plans themselves at DE/C/3

The street index is stored at The Maltings in Lewes. Unless you already know the reference numbers you will need to consult the index before any plans can be produced.

Storage and Viewings

The plans are stored off site so you need to give a week’s notice for them to be produced.

Up to ten plans can be produced to an individual in any week.

Copies of Plans

Copies of the plans can be produced by ESRO. Many of them are unsuitable for photocopying, but images can be supplied from digital photographs, either on paper or CD. Please apply to ESRO for a list of prices.
