Stray Dogs and Re-homing

A stray dog

Lost and found dogs are held in specially designed kennels at the Council's offices in Grove Road until 4pm on the day they are collected.

They are then transferred to a private boarding kennels. Current fees for recovery of dogs are shown in our Fees and Charges List, available to download below.

There are a number of websites which provide lists of lost and found dogs with the aim of reuniting them with their owners. These are listed under Other Websites.

Re-homing

Our Dog Welfare Officer and kennels go to great lengths to ensure that any stray dogs not reclaimed by their owner after seven days are re-homed to avoid the need of putting them down.

In the last ten years only nine dogs have had to be put down, all of which were not suitable for re-homing due to either ill-health or their temperament.

See our list in this section of dogs currently needing new homes.
