We give talks to schools in Eastbourne on responsible dog ownership and how children can keep safe around dogs.
We also have special webpages for kids in this section for children to have fun learning about dogs.
Meet Polar at School and Online
The Dog Welfare Officer's own dog, Polar the German Shepherd, is used for demonstration purposes at our school visits. She is very popular with the children and each pupil receives a colourful "I Have Met Polar" bookmark.
To view the bookmark either enlarge the image or download a PDF version below. The bookmark encourages the children to learn more online by visiting Polar's webpages - go to Related Pages for our Kids section.
Information for Teachers
This page has links to dog welfare resources for teachers on other websites. The Learn with Dogs site from the Dogs Trust has a wide range of pre-school, primary and secondary national curriculum-based materials.
Talks to Junior Schools
Talks to local infant and junior schools give advice to children about:
During April and May 2009 Sue and Polar visited Pashley Down Infant School, The Haven Primary School, Ocklynge Junior School, Motcombe Community School, St Johns CE School, St Bedes School and Oakwood School.
Children from five of the schools entered our design a poster competition to help tackle dog fouling in Eastbourne. You can view videos and a picture gallery of all the drawings on this site. The winning drawing has been made into a poster which will be displayed around the town.
Talks for Older Children
A recent talk at Eastbourne Technical College in Hampden Park included how the council deals with stray dogs, how they are reunited with their owners, the importance of identification and how a micro-chip works.
The students were able to use a scanner on Polar to locate her micro-chip. Some of the students also used the pole-catcher and tried on the bite gloves!
Sue also explained why it was important for owners to pick up after their dog and the implications relating to health due to disease. The talk was a big success - the students entered in discussion and asked many questions. Sue has received very positive feedback from the college.
