If you have ever lost a pet you will know just how worrying it can be and understand the importance of making sure that they are properly identified so that, when found, they can be returned to you as quickly as possible.

Dog owners have a legal requirement to ensure that your pet is kept under control and that includes proper identification with a suitable collar and clearly displayed tag. The tag must bear the name and address of the dog's owner.

In some cases, these can come astray and a microchip is a permanent form of identification that will be in place for life.

However, you should remember that microchipping is not an alternative or replacement for the requirement for a collar and tag under the Control of Dogs Act 1992.

The Kennel Club Petlog Scheme provides a range of services for owners of microchipped animals, and runs National Microchipping Month in August each year. Full details are avilable on the Kennel Club website.

To get your dog microchipped, contact your local vet.
