Green-fingered residents and flower arrangers are being encouraged to enter a brand new Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show, just one of the many competitions organised for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations from 2 – 4 June.
Gardeners will be able to submit their best radishes, gooseberries, sweet peas or even their oddest shaped vegetable at the Western Lawns event, with the chance to win prizes donated by local businesses.
Run in conjunction with Eastbourne Allotments and Gardens Society, creative flower arrangers can also submit floral displays in five categories including the Jubilee themed ‘Sceptre or Crown for a Coronation’ and ‘Jewels in the Crown’.
Many more competitions will celebrate the royal weekend including crown making and painting competitions for children, with organisers calling on schools to get creative and enter for the chance to win prizes.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Neil Stanley said “This is a great chance for the community to get involved in all of the Diamond Jubilee fun and win some great prizes too. We’ve got a packed programme of events lined up for you on the seafront over that weekend, and with these fun competitions, we are sure to bring some of the street party atmosphere to Eastbourne’s biggest jubilee celebration.”
More competitions throughout the weekend include a fancy dress competition celebrating fashion through the decades, best dressed boat in the Jubilee Flotilla, Toss the Haybale and the Club, Pub & Tug – a Tug of War which pubs, clubs and workmates throughout Eastbourne can enter with the chance to win Eastbourne Beer Festival tickets and drinks tokens.
The Diamond Jubilee and Fiesta weekend will be a three day celebration including a seafront carnival, big screen showing live events from Buckingham Palace, a Jubilee Flotilla of yachts, classic car cavalcade, live music, dancing, cookery demonstrations, Italian Market, beacon lighting and fireworks.
Organised by Eastbourne Borough Council and the Eastbourne Cultural Communities Network, sponsors include Cobb PR, The Mowbray, Hart Reade Solicitors, Eastbourne Motoring Centre Ltd, JPM Electrical, Reeves and Tesco.
