Council clears up Grot Spots

Eastbourne Borough Council has completed a major clear up of 30 “grot spots”, many of which were overgrown, untidy alleyways or passageways at the rear of domestic and commercial buildings.

The work followed complaints from members of the public and Neighbourhood Panels that the alleyways had become a haven for litter and overgrown vegetation.

Many of the alleyways are unregistered which means that ownership is not clear, or they may be the responsibility of the historic estates in the town. This means that often no-one takes on any maintenance or repair when it is needed, and so the Council has stepped in once again to take action.

Community Payback were able to provide a supervised team over a six week period working in partnership with the Council’s Community Enforcement Team and Sita, the Council’s street sweeping and refuse contractor, to address some of the worst areas.

Councillor Steve Wallis, Cabinet spokesperson for Development and Environment said, “The Council is delighted to have worked in partnership with Community Payback to make some significant improvements to some of the grottiest areas in the town. We plan a similar initiative for 2012/13 and will ask our Neighbourhood Panels to let us know what is top of their list for improvement.”
