New £1 zumba classes aim to get teenage girls active

1 February 2012

An Eastbourne leisure centre is launching a weekly subsidised zumba class in February aimed specifically at teenage girls.

Thanks to funding from Active Sussex's Legacy programme Sportivate, the Hampden Park Leisure Centre will be offering its most popular keep fit class to teenage girls for just £1 per class.

Working closely with Eastbourne Academy, the leisure centre has timed the weekly classes to fit in with the end of the school day, to make it easy for students to attend.

Zumba, a high energy combination of latin dancing and traditional keep fit class, originated in Colombia in the 1990s when fitness instructor Alberto "Beto" Perez was forced to improvise a class using tapes of South American salsa and merengue, after he'd mistakenly left his keep-fit soundtrack at home.

Sportivate Teenage Zumba commences week beginning 6 February at Hampden Park Leisure Centre for 6 weeks (contact Sports centre for date and time). 14-25 years, females only. £1 per session. Hampden Park Sports Centre, Brodrick Road, Eastbourne, BN22 9RQ
